The Platu25 was designed in the mid 90s from the Farr Yacht Design office and very soon became a very successful and competitive One Design class with more than 500 boats build worldwide. The Platu25 follows the very successful pattern of One Design classes such as the Mumm 30 (M30) and the Farr 40.
It was primarily design for exciting inshore based Windward-Leeward races. The relative small size (25 feet) and the no-compromise racing layout, create a demanding and technical racing platform that requires a well-trained crew.
The Platu 25 is an official ISAF class since November 2005, operating under its strict regulatory framework.
The boat is relatively predictable and easy to handle in light to medium conditions, something that makes it easy for inexperienced crews, but it is a handful in heavy conditions (above 15 knots) and requires a very experienced crew mainly downwind under the oversized spinnaker.
The Platu25 is very responsive to sail trimming. Even the slightest alteration in the sheets or in-haulers can create large differences in boat speed; therefore constant trimming is vital. Also, helming and heel have great effect in boat speed.
On the whole, the Platu25 is the best offering for a low-budget boat with minimum operational and maintenance cost that can offer unforgettable sailing to its owner and crew.
